| A Supreme Identity |
Roman 8:16-17: "The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ."
As the dawn of 2025 breaks, I find myself pondering on the concept of Identity. This persistent question of Who am I? is so pivotal that it shapes the very fabric of our world. Our decisions, actions, and ultimately our destinies are deeply entwined in this fundamental inquiry.
The journey of discovering one's identity is perhaps one of the most important undertakings of a lifetime. Yet, this intense journey is fraught with challenges. Studies reveal that a significant portion of the world's population experiences an identity crisis. This struggle is so profound that it leads individuals who don't seem to know who they are, to haplessly emulate others. We aspire to be like celebrities, donning the latest Jordans in an attempt to 'be like Mike' only to find ourselves in a cycle of lack of self-esteem, depression, and, in extreme cases, suicidal thoughts.
This crisis is evident in various aspects of life, such as the fashion industry. The fashion industry thrives on this identity void, reaping profits by selling images of others. The old desire to recapture their youth, while the young are eager to grow up. It is a never-ending cycle fueled by a lack of true self-awareness.
Consider Jesus, a figure who stood out because He knew exactly who He was. His frequent use of "I am" in the Bible is not coincidental. Knowing one's identity is imperative. If you don’t know who you are, you’d most likely want to be like someone else. Life is full of choices and opportunities, and if we don’t know our identity, we risk pursuing careers or relationships that are misaligned with our true selves.
Genesis 1:26: "Then God said, 'Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness'." Our identity is rooted in God and God alone. Discovering who God is gives us a clearer picture of who we are. A faulty understanding of God's mercy and love keeps us fixated on our shortcomings. Failing to grasp God's greatness confines us to our limitations and not recognizing His riches keeps us in despair. We pay undue attention to what others say about us and sometimes believe the negative things we think about ourselves. Don't fall for the lies that you are worthless, damaged, a failure, or a victim. Rather, immerse yourself in God's word and proclaim what He says about you. God says you are an overcomer (Romans 8:37), you are beautiful (Psalm 45:11), you are protected (Psalm 121: 3), you are strong (Psalm 18:35), you are loved (Jeremiah 31: 3), you are empowered (Phil 4:13), and you are a new creation (2 Cor 5:17).
On this New Year's Day, decide to deepen your knowledge of God, which will lead to a clearer understanding of yourself. Today is a good day to start seeking God.
Reflections: To answer the great question of "Who am I?", you will find the answer in the 'Great I AM'.
